A finely hand painted faience cachepot, probably Italian, dating from the late nineteenth century. Decorated in the Renaissance Revival taste, the ovoid body is centred by a playful faun playing a double flute, surrounded by delicate grotesques, ribbon swags and scrolling floral ornament in soft blues, greens and ochres.
The vessel is mounted in finely cast gilt bronze in the Empire style, with elegant scrolling handles and a square base enriched with classical drapery swags and decorative corner finials. The interior retains its original tinplate lining, intended to protect the faience when used as a cachepot.
A beautifully decorative piece that would make an elegant addition to a console, library or mantelpiece.
Ca 38 cm high inc holders.
